Rows of bound legal volumes on dark wooden shelves in a quiet library, lit from one side
Legal counsel · Northern circuit

Careful advice on the matters that decide how your year goes.

North Lumen is a small practice built around one idea: you should always understand what is happening in your own matter, what it will cost, and what happens next.

  • · Written scope before work begins
  • · One named solicitor per matter
  • · Plain-language correspondence

What we handle

Three areas, advised properly rather than broadly.

We keep the practice deliberately narrow. If a matter sits outside these areas, we will tell you at the first conversation instead of taking it on.

I.

Commercial & contracts

Agreements read and drafted so the obligations are legible to the people who have to live with them.

  • Supply, service and distribution agreements
  • Shareholder and partnership terms
  • Contract review before signature
  • Dispute correspondence and settlement
II.

Property & land

Transactions and boundary questions handled with the searches done early, not the week before completion.

  • Commercial leases and renewals
  • Freehold sale and purchase
  • Easements, access and boundaries
  • Title queries and restrictive covenants
III.

Employment & workplace

Advice for employers and individuals on the point where a working relationship becomes a legal one.

  • Contracts, handbooks and policies
  • Grievance and disciplinary process
  • Settlement agreements
  • Restructure and redundancy planning

How we work

Four stages, and you always know which one you are in.

Most frustration with legal work comes from not knowing what is happening. We structure every matter the same way so that question never needs asking.

  1. First conversation

You describe the situation; we tell you whether it needs legal work at all, and whether we are the right practice for it. No charge, no obligation.

  2. Written scope

Before any work starts, you receive a letter setting out what we will do, who will do it, how fees are calculated, and what falls outside the scope.

  3. Active handling

One named solicitor stays with the matter throughout. You are told when something changes, and asked before any step that affects cost or position.

  4. Close and record

At the end you receive a plain summary of what was agreed, the documents that matter, and a note of anything worth watching in future.

Before you write

The questions people ask first.

If yours is not here, put it in the enquiry form — an unanswered question is a reasonable reason to get in touch.

How are your fees structured?

It depends on the matter. Defined pieces of work — a lease review, a settlement agreement — are quoted as a fixed fee. Matters that develop over time are charged hourly against an agreed ceiling, and we come back to you before that ceiling is reached. Either way, the figures are in your scope letter before work begins.

What should I bring to a first meeting?

Whatever you already have: the contract, the correspondence, the notice, the title documents. If you have nothing written down, that is fine too — a clear account of what happened and in what order is genuinely more useful than a partial paper trail.

How quickly will I hear back?

Enquiries sent through this page are read by a solicitor, not an inbox filter, and answered within one working day. If your matter has a deadline — a notice period, a tribunal date, a completion date — say so in the first line and it will be prioritised.

Can this be handled remotely?

Most of it, yes. Documents are exchanged securely, meetings can be held by video, and signatures are handled electronically where the document allows it. Where a matter genuinely requires meeting in person, we will tell you at the outset rather than partway through.

Enquiry

Tell us what the situation is.

A few lines is enough to start. We will read it, tell you honestly whether it needs legal work, and set out what handling it would involve.

Anything you send through this form is treated as confidential. Sending an enquiry does not create a solicitor–client relationship; that begins only once a scope letter is agreed in writing.

Please leave out documents and sensitive details for now — we will ask for those securely if needed.
